Content Bar openings aren't my forté, but I went to Bordello Soho last night for a friends and family launch. Sam Buxton and colleagues designed the interiors, commissioned by Robata Ltd. Without vast experience in London bar culture, I can't set Bordello against any standards, but I did find the design curious and worth visiting for.

Bordello 1

Walls are covered with red curtains of hand-tied netting giving the decor a sort of modern organic feel. It doesn't scream rustic organic, as its set off against Sam's signature metal sheeting style which he has wrought into the serving bar area.

Content On the 15th May, we visited Hollywood in Los Angeles and stopped by The Chinese Theatre. It was pretty hot as it has been during our stay in the US so far, but this tourist magnet also brings in lots of entertainers dressed up in thickly layered costumes, posing as celebrities and fictional characters to pose for photographs and money.

Think Hello Kitty, Batman, Barney the purple dinosaur, Michael Jackson and Supergirl. I've no idea (with the exception of Supergirl in her shorts) how these guys can tolerate the sweltering heat.

Content I've just returned from a two week trip to the west coast of the USA and having uploaded a whole pile of photos to Flickr, am spending some time reflecting on the visit. I plan to post miscellaneous (post-visit) observations in the near future, if anything, to remind myself about the things that made me think, smile, confused and bemused.

Las Vegas Sign

I've never covered so many miles within the relatively short time frame, having travelled between Las Vegas, Palm Springs, San Diego, Los Angeles and San Francisco. Whoever said the Americans love road trips, weren't kidding!

Content I've been in touch with London-based, Malaysian-born writer Yang-May who I profiled on Visible Chinese, and she recently asked to profile me back on two websites she is involved with. It's now up on her sites and I thought I'd include the text here as well. More details and links at the end of the article...

Article :

Unofficially named "Mark Wu" (my Chinese name being my legal identifier), I've led a quite straight-forward life. My parents came to the UK when they were teenagers and met and married young.

My brother, sister and I were subsequently born into the British Chinese culture which labels a generation of young Chinese people whose parents immigrated to the UK, and where the majority of families were involved in one way or another, in catering.

Content I saw this diagram explaining the British Isles and the relationships between England, Great Britain, Ireland etc. I'm not obsessed with the finer details of the countries make-up, but it did make me realise that I needed to brush up on my geography a little!

UK Diagram

Besides, I'm partial to a bit of information design, and so I couldn't resist redrawing this diagram.

The Republic of Ireland and the United Kingdom are the only two sovereign states and are shown in orange. Ireland and Great Britain are both islands. England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are constituent countries of the United Kingdom and are shown as dark red circles.
