News hits today about Facebook's impending new modern messaging system that will unite the ways people send messages — including e-mail, IM and SMS — into a single interface, but seamlessly and effortlessly on the user's part.

Overall, its a very good idea and foreseeable as an all encompassing and convenient service for online users well versed in Facebook's interface. But for those with options, I can only imagine being held hostage to such a service that hosts all your contacts and historic communications. After the new functionality that Facebook will offer becomes standard, I only hope that other technologies will adopt similar techniques but offer users the freedom of control over their own data.
