Melody Writer

ABRSM is the exam board of the Royal Schools of Music, delivering over 650,000 exams and assessments every year in 93 countries.

The overall look of these designs were dictated by the existing ABRSM website (although this seems to have evolved) but the focus of this project was on the "Melody Writer” - the interface in the second screen above.

The Melody Writer is an online tool for writing and improving melodies using standard music notation. It helps students to improve their musical knowledge and understanding and is specifically designed to help with a melody writing question in an ABRSM Grade 5 Music Theory exam.

The brief for the central button interface was for it to look like a 90’s mobile phone (think Nokia) and it took several drafts for this to work.

Admittedly, I know very little about writing music, so this was definitely a collaboration with the client and other team members, but there was also the practical issue and challenge of positioning these buttons so that they could be built in html (no Flash as this was aimed at iPads as well as desktop).

Users of the Melody Writer create their melodies one note at a time. Each time a note is added, buttons in the central area stay on or turn off depending on which options they choose for that note. Editing is possible by going back and highlighting a previous note, and the “Visualisation” panel helps users to see a different view of their melody so far.
