Designer Job Titles

Saturday, 27 September, 2008

I've considered the "merits" (or not) of particular job titles in design and whether people actually get what they mean. So when I came across this flow chart (below) showing a light hearted look at the response to these four design job titles, I nodded - with resigned feeling.

Not only is the title 'design' quite open, but jeez, as soon as it touches on the web, it becomes IT-related. I keep getting asked IT questions by my clients, although I insist that's not what I do. I guess I should give up and accept it because I'm always having to solve IT problems anyway.

Still, at least the chart made me laugh. If you can't read it like my super-lasered eyes, click it to open a larger version.

Job titles are actually a really big problem in the recruitment business. There are many many different titles that mean completely different things in different countries, even in different companies. So when hiring it is really important to sit down and thing through what one really wants, you can’t just say that you want a “key account manager”, because a key account manager means different things if you live in London or if you live in Gateshead in Wales!

that's a really good point Peter, my last company actually had different people calling different positions different names! it was poorly organised to the the least, hence it is my last and not current place of work...
